New Life boy basketball: Eagles fall in pair of close conference contests
The New Life Academy boys basketball team lost a pair of games last week – first to non-conference foe St. Anthony Village, 76-65, on Tuesday, Feb. 14, and then to MCAA opponent Trinity School, 59-54, on Friday, Feb. 17.
The losses dropped NLA’s record to 12-9 overall and 5-2 in the conference.
Against St. Anthony Village (17-5), the Eagles fell behind 39-30 at the half and couldn’t come back. St. Anthony Village outscored the Eagles 37-35 in the second half to hang on. For New Life, senior Dan Otto racked up a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Senior forward Alex Heiser led the Eagles in scoring with 19 points, to go along with four assists, while junior guard Cam Duffy chipped in 10 points and had a team-high seven assists.
St. Anthony’s two-headed monster of Dustin Iannazzo and Anthony Brama combined for 49 points.
Trinity sharpshooter Tony Kuplic put on a show in New Life’s second game of the week. The senior guard scored a season-high 42 points – out of Trinity’s 59 – in the five-point win. Trinity (15-8; 6-2 MCAA) jumped out to a 28-18 lead in the game and held on, even though the Eagles outscored the Tri Hawks 36-31 in the second half.
Otto led the way with 11 points and nine rebounds in the loss and Horner netted a team high 16 points to go along with three rebounds and three assists. In addition, senior forward Cody Linton scored 10 points and hauled down five boards.
New Life took on St. Agnes on Tuesday, Feb. 21, after the Bulletin went to print. Next, the Eagles play host to Southwest Christian on Thursday, Feb. 23.
